APO Cement resumes operations 3 months after deadly landslide

Cement manufacturer APO Cement Corporation has resumed the operation of the two kilns in its manufacturing plant in the City of Naga, Cebu, nearly three months after a massive landslide killed around 80 people in the area.

The company will also not pursue its plan to lay off its workers and close its terminal in Davao City, parent firm CEMEX Holdings Philippines, Inc. said in a disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange on Wednesday, December 12, 2018.

“APO Cement continues to cooperate with its principal raw materials provider, APO Land and Quarry Corporation, and the corresponding national and local authorities to address the situation in Naga, Cebu,” CEMEX stated.

Some 78 people perished and five people remained missing in a massive landslide that struck Barangay Tinaan, near the site of APO Land’s quarry operations, on September 20, 2018.

Environment Secretary Roy Cimatu ordered the 15-day suspension of all quarry operations in Central Visayas and seven other regions following the deadly landslide.

In Central Visayas, the Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) regional office said 26 large-scale quarry and ISAG (industrial sand and gravel) operations were suspended. Central Visayas is composed of the provinces of Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental and Siquijor.

The suspension was lifted in October, except for the operations of APO Land. The Department of Environment and Natural Resources has said it will only lift the suspension order against APO Land when the latter has addressed hazard issues. (Ventures Cebu)
